Reliable Off-Grid Power for a Remote Island Home
NESD recently completed a unique off-grid solar and battery storage project on Money Island in Branford, Connecticut. Because utility power is not available on the island, the homeowner relies entirely on solar energy and battery storage to power the property throughout the year.
The customer's existing system had served its purpose for many years but was no longer meeting their energy needs. The original setup consisted of four 230-watt solar panels and a smaller battery system that struggled to provide reliable overnight power. During the summer months, when the home was occupied more frequently, lights and box fans would often shut off in the middle of the night due to insufficient battery capacity and limited solar production.
The homeowner contacted NESD to design and install a modern off-grid solution capable of providing dependable power around the clock while supporting additional devices and increased energy usage.
Overcoming the Challenges of a Remote Island Installation
One of the most unique aspects of this project was the location itself. Money Island is only accessible by boat, creating significant logistical challenges for transporting equipment and coordinating the installation.
Timing was critical. Due to tidal conditions, boats could only approach within approximately 200 feet of the property during lower tides. Delivering large solar panels, mounting equipment, tools, and a battery weighing more than 250 pounds required careful planning and coordination. Our team worked closely with the homeowner and delivery partners to schedule equipment transportation during favorable tide conditions to ensure everything arrived safely and efficiently.

Tidal Issues
Upgrading the Solar and Battery System
To dramatically improve performance, NESD removed the existing solar array and battery system and replaced them with a significantly more powerful setup.
The original four 230-watt solar panels were replaced with five high-efficiency 430-watt solar panels. The new array more than doubles the home's solar production capacity while maximizing available roof space with a cleaner, more symmetrical layout.
The outdated battery system was also upgraded to a Tesla Powerwall, providing nearly four times the energy storage capacity of the previous setup. This substantial increase allows the homeowner to run lights, fans, electronics, and other household devices throughout the night with confidence.
Results That Exceeded Expectations
The completed system has transformed the way the homeowner uses and enjoys the property. With significantly increased solar production and dramatically expanded battery storage, the home now has reliable power both day and night.
The customer can comfortably operate lights, charging stations, box fans, and additional appliances without worrying about unexpected power interruptions. Just as importantly, they now have greater peace of mind knowing their off-grid energy system is designed to meet their needs for years to come.
